Dr In Use

Postcrisis is a project that interrelates architecture, the visual arts and contemporary thinking. The curators have chosen the brick to look into the interpretational and material possibilities of our built environments through original artworks that make use of this material. Each work of art has been installed in a separate space in Madrid, and the exhibition is presented as a tour of the city. The identity is built on the concept of space / time: on the one hand, the distribution of the artworks in the city, placing them on the map; on the other, the uncertainty of the current moment, which positions the Postcrisis not as “after” but as a permanent state. It uses elements and materials that represent the nexus of the exhibition, the brick, attempting to show a variety of colors in all materials. The result synthesizes complex information through a few resources in the pursuit of a simple but powerful image that incites to discover and reflect. Big type uses Dr (Production Type), paired with smaller text set in Graphik (Commercial Type).

Postcrisis
For its new exhibition, the Jeu de Paume wanted to offer a mainstream publication that would showcase the work of Albert Renger-Patzsch, one of the major German photographers. Bureau Brut choose a wide format (22×31 cm/8.66×13″), which allowed them to put the black and white pictures in the spotlight, as the core of the layout. Conceived as a companion to the exhibition, it follows the same path and gives the reader details and comments on the displayed pieces. The geometrical sans serif Dr, designed by the studio, was chosen for the setting of titles and pull quotes inside the book, echoing the 60s era, as well as Futura, used for the main text.

About this font

Dr is a curious kind of geometric sans serif. With only minimal optical corrections of the letterforms, widely differing proportions, and some preposterous looking design details a lot in this typeface seems weirdly off. As if artificial body parts had been affixed where the “normal” ones have gone missing.

Bureau Brut initially developed Dr as part of the design for a medical company specialized in orthopedic prosthetics and implants for hands and wrists. The visual language signifies clear and precise surgical procedures.
Dr may seem crude at first sight, but the characters were constructed with similar surgical precision. Narrow apertures to the counter forms of the letters represent the preciseness of the medical products and procedures. These are also reflected in the letter fit: While the openings of characters like c or e as well as the spacing are still generous in the light weights, they get tighter and more closed as the weight increases across the family. Analogously, the distance between the i and its dot. This makes Dr — foremost a display typeface designed for word marks and headlines — unique and punchy in appearance but still harmoniously looking in a whole paragraph of text.
