The introduction of F. virginiana from eastern North America to Europe in the 17th century is an important part of history because it is one of the two species that gave rise to the modern strawberry. The new species gradually spread through the continent and did not become completely appreciated until the end of the 18th century. A French excursion journeyed to Chile in 1712, which led to the introduction of a strawberry plant with female flowers that resulted in the common strawberry.
Sweetness, fragrance and complex flavor are favorable attributes.In plant breeding and farming, emphasis is placed on sugars, acids, and volatile compounds, which improve the taste and fragrance of a ripe strawberry. Although often sweet tasting, strawberries actually have relatively low sugar levels compared to other fruits. Esters, terpenes, and furans are the chemical compounds having the strongest relationships to strawberry flavor, sweetness and fragrance, with a total of 31 out of some 360 volatile compounds significantly correlated to favorable flavor and fragrance.

The leaves are compound, typically with three leaflets, sawtooth-edged, and usually hairy. The flowers, generally white, rarely reddish, are borne in small clusters on slender stalks arising, like the surface creeping stems, from the axils of the leaves. As a plant ages, the root system becomeswoody.

About this font

Supleix examines the tension between angular and curved shapes in sans-serif typography. Designed by Jean-Baptiste Levée and released in 2024, Supleix was first approached as a geometry study, where shape and countershape create a tension interplay. As Levée sought to introduce polished and smoothed curves on the outer shapes of Supleix, the result was frustratingly round. Exploring further around superellipsis as exemplified in Aldo Novarese’s seminal Eurostile, Levée introduced these Lamé curves (after French mathematician Gabriel Lamé, another name for “superellipse”) in Supleix’s countershapes. The latter is, quite predictably, as round as a square could be, leading to the kind of paradoxes that Levée usually seeks in typeface design: after Tesseract, Constellation, Stunt, and Minotaur, Supleix is Levée’s latest attempt at materializing the relationship between geometry and the digital description of typographical surfaces. Supleix has all the subtle hints of American Gothic typefaces, as well as a moderately squarish feel that’s often found in Teutonic grotesks.
Supleix is characterized by a moderately tight spacing that the discerning designer will want to customize at will, while the typeface’s slight contrast of the typeface will sit just right in jobbing works. For more specific highlights, have a look at the lowercase a and its middle semi-smooth connection. The mathematical approach of Supleix also lead to some slightly flared terminals on round letters such as C, G, J, S, a, c, e, and g, resulting in something atypical enough in geometric fonts to be worth mentioning. Characters like f, j, and t have flat terminals and increase the mechanical and constructed feel of the typeface. In a similar ambiance, the r is designed with a dramatic cut terminal, and the t features a round connection between the stem and crossbar. Numeral 4 will stand out with its inward round upper left corner stem, just like uppercase D features unexpected serifs.
