Alaric Garnier
Alaric Garnier superimposes the practices of a typeface designer, a letter painter, a graphic designer, and a publisher. His views on letter shapes have produced a small collection of explorative typefaces.
Despite the traditional sign painting training he received from Sean Barton in Seattle, Garnier’s digital typography avoids mimicking brush strokes or casual lettering structures. The remaining effects of his output are a compound of its author’s gesture, energy, and freshness.
Together with his associate Léna Araguas, they design books and other printed objects, websites, and visual identities for culture and commerce. Their projects are marked by their interest in political and social history, the history of typography, printing processes, literature, and fine and vernacular arts.
Alaric Garnier co-founded the publishing house Rotolux Press in 2015 to develop an editorial practice of self-initiated projects: collections of poetry, essays, artists' books, catalogues, fanzines, all serving as pretexts to challenge the status of texts and images.
Alaric Garnier studied graphic design and typography at Ensba Lyon from 2009 to 2013. He has been teaching graphic design and typography in the Master's program at the same school since 2016. He lives and works in Seine-Saint-Denis.
