Tempel In Use

Maiden Voyage Festival is a yearly music event held in London, UK. It was initiated in 2019 by the notorious Jazz Café from Camden and focused on jazz, hip hop, afrobeat and funk. For pandemic reasons, there was no 2020 edition and after that, the festival slowly shifted to other musical fields. In 2024, the party sported an impressive techno-electro line-up with a strong queer sidekick. For the first time London’s Burgess Park became the physical site of the festival while the website and visual identity underwent a revision. In the framework of this overhaul, the designers in charge picked Tempel Softland by Reymund Schröder for the logotype and, in all-caps use, for the headlines on the website. Released by Production Type, Tempel Softland is a supplement to Tempel Grotesk and comes in three narrow styles: Condensed (in use here), Ultra Condensed, and Compressed. All letters are drawn in brick-like rectangles but the edges appear rounded as if they were the result of some routing technique. The second typeface on display is Space Grotesk by Florian Karsten, a proportional sans that deliberately references the look of monospaced fonts. It’s used here for the reading texts and as a complement to Tempel Softland. Other elements of the visual identity like the amorphous computer-generated shapes, the bright, flashy colors, and the predilection for rounded text fields with outlines reflect current trends in graphic design just as much as the style of mid-1990s techno flyers.

Maiden Voyage Festival 2024
Identity for the second volume of the Purewal Cup football tournament. This is a neighbourhood event where a team of young people organise a two-day party every year. The “Mondiale del Kebab” comprises a 5vs5 football tournament, a beach volleyball tournament, and many other small activities. The intent is to keep the neighbourhood residents united and proud, all against racism.

About this font

Tempel Grotesk, another concoction from the LAB, is a blocky black sans in four widths. All that ink creates a fantastically heavy page with rich texture popping through the counterforms—even better when you mix widths in the same design. Individual characters are also worth highlighting as graphic devices all their own—start with the authoritative cap G and the lowercase r—it feels wonderfully machined.

Tempel Softland is a variation of Tempel Grotesk, in a very much rounded version. It comes in three tight styles: Condensed, Ultra Condensed and Compressed. While Tempel Condensed has this compact yet still curvy design, Tempel Softland’s letters are rectangular blocks aligned into stacks, each character trying to take up as much space as it can. Tempel Softland pushes to its limits the idea of a compressed rounded, as words become bricks to arrange into a wall. After all, there isn’t that much soft in Tempel Softland. Somewhat brutalist in its shapes, it brings to mind the impactful titles of sci-fi novels, as if the type had been generated from a new technological device.

Reymund Schröder graduated from his typedesign studies with a focus on experimental print-making. Reymund collaborates with artists on letterform-related projects, and has worked as an independent type designer for a wide range of clients – for print publishing production as well as for custom fonts. He is a founding member of the type foundry Forgotten-Shapes.
