Deberny and Peignot, Album d’Alphabets pour la pratique du Croquis-Calque.

Then-competing French foundries merged into Deberny et Peignot in 1923, creating a dominant force in French typography. Their publication of an album reflected this historic alliance.
In 1923, the two large competing French foundries joined forces to create Deberny and Peignot, which would dominate French typography until the second half of the 20th century. It was probably on this occasion that was published the Album d'Alphabets pour la pratique du Croquis-Calque. Edité spécialement pour le Manuel français de Typographie moderne de F. Thibaudeau. (Album of Alphabets for the practice of Sketch-Tracking, Edited especially for the French Manual of Modern Typography by F. Thibaudeau) It should be noted that the Fonderie typographique française (FTF), established in 1921, and also resulting from the association of several foundries, published an album under the same title and under a similar cover, but with its own types. This curious coincidence perhaps comes from a tribute paid to Francis Thibaudeau, whose important Manuel is the sum of his conceptions on typography, published in 1924, a year before his death. If this is the case, we could date the two editions from 1925.
The range of types presented by Deberny and Peignot is essentially made up of creations from the years before the First World War. Cochin and Auriol types are in the spotlight, while in the general catalogs of the foundry which will follow, only Robur and Auriol will remain. In general, the Art Nouveau creations will be expunged.
