Deberny et Peignot, “Sphinx” and “Éclair”
In 1934, the Deberny et Peignot foundry published Éclair, under the urging of Maximillien Vox, in order to complete the Sphinx series and renew its success. This curious “open” face did not achieve the fame of Sphinx. The specimen recalls its illustrious ancestry: “Since its birth, Sphinx has been enriched by satellites whose careers were less happy for itself than them: Sphinx Étroit, Sphinx Italique, Sphinx Blanc, and the last born, Éclair. To serve on posters, where it is incomparable, “Sphinx” was cut in wood.
